Buying fiber cable used to be easy. You sent a request for quote, picked the lowest price, and waited two weeks. That market is gone. Right now, prices are moving week to week, lead times have doubled on specialty grades, and counterfeit certifications are a real problem. This guide tells you what to check, what to ask, and what numbers to use when you plan a project budget in 2025 and 2026.

1. Total cost of ownership - why cable price is the small part
Most people start a fiber project by asking "how much does the cable cost per meter?" That is the wrong question. The cable itself is often the cheapest line item on the invoice.
According to the Fiber Broadband Association 2025 Fiber Deployment Cost Annual Report (Cartesian), installation and labor account for approximately 64–72% of total project cost depending on deployment type (aerial vs. underground). Aerial vs. underground: what the numbers actually mean
Aerial fiber - cable hung on utility poles - costs less to put up. Work moves fast; no digging, no excavation permits. The catch is maintenance: cables above ground deal with wind, ice, and wildlife. One bad storm can cost more in repairs than you saved at installation.
Underground fiber costs more upfront. Dense urban areas with permits and surface restoration push total costs well above the median. But once it is in the ground, you rarely touch it. For routes carrying high traffic or serving critical users, underground is usually the right call.

2. How to evaluate a fiber cable supplier - 14-point checklist
The fiber market in 2025 and 2026 has drawn in a large number of new sellers. Some are good. Some are not. Prices are moving fast, which means a supplier who cannot explain where their product comes from is a real risk - not just to your budget, but to your installation passing inspection and code compliance.
Documentation checks (mandatory)
1. Certification documents match the company name on the invoice. Ask for ISO 9001, RoHS, and any UL listing certificates. A mismatch almost always means you are buying from a trading company, not the factory.
2. For LSZH cable: demand the actual IEC test reports, not just a label. Ask for IEC 60754 (halogen content), IEC 61034 (smoke density), and IEC 60332 (flame spread). If they cannot produce this within 24 hours, the claim is likely not real.
3. For plenum-rated cable: confirm UL-910 listing, not just a claim. OFNP (plenum) and OFNR (riser) are NEC fire-safety categories verified by UL. Ask for the UL file number and verify it at UL's public database. Cables installed in air-handling spaces that fail this check are a code violation and a fire risk.
4. Request the datasheet and compare key specs to ITU-T standards. For G.652D single-mode, attenuation must not exceed 0.35 dB/km at 1310 nm and 0.20 dB/km at 1550 nm. Core diameter should be 9.0 ± 0.4 µm.
5. Ask for a batch-specific test report (OTDR or attenuation) for the drums in your order. Good manufacturers test every reel. This is your baseline if you run your own commissioning test and get a different result.
Technical and manufacturing checks
6. Ask a specific engineering question and see how fast they answer. Try: "Can you provide the attenuation test report for G.652D at 1550 nm for your current stock?" A factory answers within minutes. A trading company says "let me check with my colleague" and comes back a day later.
7. Confirm the jacket material is 100% virgin, not recycled. Recycled plastic jackets look fine when new. Outdoors, they crack and degrade within a year. Specify "100% virgin PE" or "100% virgin LSZH compound" in your purchase order.
8. Verify the fiber brand inside the cable. Cable assemblies can use glass from Corning, YOFC, Fujikura, or unbranded sources. Know which one you are paying for and specify it in writing.
9. Request a free sample before a large order. Most real manufacturers send 1–5 meters at no cost (you pay courier shipping). If a supplier refuses a sample for a substantial order, that is a signal worth noting.
Commercial and supply chain checks
10. Get quote validity in writing. In March 2026, many suppliers are giving quote validity of 1–3 business days on G.652D and G.657A2. Build a week of float into your procurement timeline for the RFQ stage alone.
11. Ask whether G.654E or specialty fiber is allocated or spot. A supplier who says they have G.654E "readily available" at below-market price in early 2026 deserves a hard follow-up question about where it is coming from.
12. Clarify the allocation rule when supply is tight. Honest suppliers use first-paid-first-served or first-confirmed-first-served. Vague answers like "we'll do our best" mean your order may slip if a larger customer comes in.
13. Check delivery track record, not just lead time claims. Lead times stated in a 2024 catalog are not the lead times of March 2026. Ask for recent on-time delivery data or customer references.
14. For large orders from China, plan sea freight and confirm drum weight early. A single 4 km reel of ADSS cable can weigh over 500 kg. Air freight is not viable for anything above sample drums. Sea freight from China typically takes 25–35 days to Europe or the US West Coast.
3. Current lead times - standard vs. specialty fiber in 2025–2026
For most of 2022 to 2024, standard fiber cable shipped in two to four weeks from Chinese manufacturers. That window has moved, and it has moved differently depending on fiber type.
Standard grades: G.652D and G.657A2
For G.652D outdoor cable and G.657A2 FTTH drop cable, production lead times from Chinese factories are currently 7–10 business days for moderate volumes. Large bulk orders (five or more containers) need 15–20 days. Add sea freight time on top: 25–35 days to Europe or the US West Coast.
The bigger change is not production time - it is quote validity and price predictability. Quotes that were good for 30 days in 2024 are now good for 3–5 business days. Some suppliers are updating prices daily.
Specialty grades: G.654E, OM5, hollow-core fiber
G.654E ultra-low-loss fiber - the grade now specified for long-haul AI data center interconnect - is a different situation. In early 2026, lead times from some suppliers have extended to 52 weeks or more for large orders without a prior relationship.
Optical fiber preform - the upstream raw material - takes 18–24 months to bring new capacity online once investment is committed. 4. Price benchmarks by spec - 2025 to 2026 data
Fiber cable prices are moving faster right now than at any point in recent memory. The numbers below reflect the market as of early 2026. Use them for planning and budgeting - do not treat them as quotes.
What happened to prices and why
For most of 2022 to early 2025, the fiber market was a buyer's market. G.652D bare fiber in China sat at around 16–18 RMB per fiber-kilometer - a price many buyers got used to as a baseline.
Starting in mid-2025, that changed. Three demand sources converged simultaneously:
AI data center construction: Global data center fiber demand grew significantly year-on-year in 2025, driven by hyperscaler buildouts for AI infrastructure. CRU Group published demand forecasts showing data center fiber requirements substantially outpacing prior projections.

The Chinese spot market is widely used as a reference because it has more transparent pricing than the contract-heavy Western market, where major suppliers like Corning and Prysmian typically do not publish spot prices.
G.657A2 - bend-insensitive FTTH fiber
G.657A2 pricing moved sharply - from around 30–35 RMB per fiber-kilometer before 2026 to 210–230 RMB per fiber-kilometer by March 2026, a roughly 550–557% increase.
G.654E - ultra-low-loss long-haul fiber
G.654E commands a 20–30% premium over G.652D at equivalent volume levels. For data center projects that specified G.654E in 2024 plans, the right move in 2026 is to confirm allocation - not just pricing - before assuming the product will be available when your construction window opens.
Finished cable vs. bare fiber: the price translation
A useful reference point: China Tower's 2025–2026 centralized procurement set a baseline price for standard GYTA G.652D 24-core outdoor cable at 1,197 RMB per sheath-kilometer. This is a carrier procurement level. Smaller buyers pay more per unit.

Tier 2 - Cable manufacturers using purchased fiber
This tier buys fiber from the mills above and manufactures cable. Quality varies more than at Tier 1. The key question is which fiber brand is inside the cable. A Tier 2 manufacturer using Corning or YOFC fiber can produce a very good product. Ask which mill supplies their fiber; ask for the brand by name; ask for upstream material traceability records.
What to specify in your purchase order regardless of tier

The market has changed. Prices are higher, quote validity is shorter, and supply of specialty grades is genuinely constrained. Buyers who are managing this well are doing three things: starting procurement earlier in the project timeline; building relationships with suppliers who are honest about allocation; and being specific in their purchase orders - not just asking for "fiber cable" but specifying grade, construction, certification, and fiber brand. Vague specifications invite substitution. Clear specifications do not.
