FAT, CTO, NAP, Pre-connectorized Terminal - What Each Name Means

Depending on your region, operator documentation, or supplier catalogue, the GL-CTO16 may be listed under four different names. All four describe the same distribution node performing the same function at the same position in the FTTH ODN. Here is the regional and technical context for each.

FAT Fiber access terminal
FAT

Fiber Access Terminal - the ITU-T and global standard term

FAT is the term used in ITU-T G.984, G.987, and related PON standards documentation. It describes any terminal enclosure at the feeder-to-drop junction in the FTTH ODN, integrating optical splitting, fiber splicing, drop cable distribution, and environmental protection. The GL-CTO16 is a 16-port FAT in every technical and standards-aligned sense.

CTO

Caixa Terminal Óptica - Latin American term

CTO is the dominant term across Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, and Mexico - originating from Portuguese ("Optical Terminal Box"). "CTO16" means a 16-port CTO, which is structurally and functionally identical to a 16-port FAT. The GL-CTO16 model designation reflects this naming convention. All CTO specifications and cable compatibility requirements are met by the GL-CTO16.

NAP

Network Access Point - European operator term

NAP is preferred by European FTTH operators - particularly in Spain, France, Eastern Europe, and the UK. It describes the same product at the same network position. A "16-port NAP box" in a European tender specification requires a GL-CTO16-equivalent product. All GL-CTO16 dimensions, protection ratings, and connector specifications are compatible with European FTTH NAP infrastructure requirements.

PCT

Pre-Connected Terminal - engineering description

"Pre-connectorized" or "pre-connected" terminal is the descriptive engineering term used in manufacturer documentation and procurement specifications globally, emphasising the key operational advantage: drop cables connect to the box without on-site splicing because the internal PLC splitter pigtails are already factory-routed to the Mini SC adapter ports. The GL-CTO16 is fully pre-connectorized.

Where the GL-CTO16 sits in your network

GL-CTO16 in the FTTH ODN Architecture

The FAT/CTO16 occupies the Access Distribution Point position in the FTTH ODN - the last splitter level before subscriber premises. Every design decision in the GL-CTO16 traces back to the specific mechanical and optical demands of this network position.

Subscriber

At this node, the GL-CTO16 performs four simultaneous functions: optical splitting (1 feeder → 16 subscriber paths via integrated PLC splitter), fiber splicing (feeder cable to splitter input, managed in 2 splice trays), drop cable distribution (16 Mini SC hardened adapter ports for subscriber drop cables), and environmental protection (IP65-sealed ABS+PC housing for outdoor pole, wall, and aerial installation). In a pre-connectorized FAT, drop cable activation at each port requires only plugging in a pre-terminated cable - no opening the enclosure, no splicing.

Engineering specification

What the GL-CTO16 Delivers - Engineering Logic Behind Every Parameter

Each specification in the GL-CTO16 addresses a specific operational requirement at the FTTH distribution node. We explain the engineering reasoning - not just list numbers - so procurement teams can evaluate against competitive claims with precision.

01

16 × Huawei-Compatible Mini SC Reinforced Adapter Ports

The GL-CTO16 provides 16 factory-installed Huawei Opti-tap Mini SC reinforced adapter ports - the pre-connectorized interface between the internal PLC splitter pigtails and the subscriber drop cables. Mini SC reinforced adapters differ from standard SC adapters in three operationally important ways: the hardened housing withstands repeated plug-in/out cycles in outdoor conditions without housing cracking; the sealed cap design provides per-port IP67 environmental protection; and the Huawei Opti-tap dimensional compatibility ensures drop cable assemblies from all major FTTH equipment manufacturers connect without adapter mismatch.

Each port is factory-labeled for identification. Custom laser marking on the lid is available on OEM orders, enabling project-specific port-to-subscriber documentation to be applied at manufacture rather than added by hand in the field.

Ports: 16 × Huawei Opti-tap Mini SC reinforced · Individual port IP67 sealed cap · Factory-labeled 1–16 · Custom laser marking OEM available
02

Two Splice Trays with Transparent Covers - 8 Cores Each, 1 Splitter Slot

The GL-CTO16 includes two splice trays with transparent covers, each accommodating fusion splicing for 8 fiber cores and providing 1 steel-tube fixation slot for the splitter pigtail pass-through. Total splice capacity: 16 fusion splices - one per subscriber output path, covering the feeder cable-to-splitter input splice for the complete 1×16 split configuration.

The transparent tray covers serve an operational purpose beyond protection: they allow OTDR trace verification at each splice point without opening the tray - the technician inserts the OTDR probe at the adapter port and can visually identify which splice is being evaluated through the transparent cover. This accelerates post-installation acceptance testing in multi-subscriber configurations where the failing splice must be located efficiently without disturbing the entire tray.

Splice trays: 2 × 8-core, transparent cover · Splitter fixation: 1 steel-tube slot per tray · Total capacity: 16F fusion splices · OTDR-accessible without tray removal
03

Integrated PLC Splitter - 1×16 Steel-Tube Mini or 2×1:8 Field-Swappable

The GL-CTO16 splitter tray accepts steel-tube mini PLC splitters in two configurations: a single 1×16 module (one feeder fiber → 16 subscriber paths) or two 1:8 modules (two feeder fibers → 8 paths each). The steel-tube PLC housing provides superior mechanical protection versus bare-chip or ABS-box mini PLCs in outdoor thermal cycling environments - the steel tube isolates the planar waveguide from direct thermal stress.

Configuration selection is project-dependent: 1×16 minimises feeder cable fiber consumption (1 fiber serves 16 subscribers); 2×1:8 provides path diversity for networks where two independent feeder fibers are routed for redundancy, or where the OLT port architecture allocates 8 subscribers per PON port. The GL-CTO16 accepts either configuration in the same physical tray slot - specify on order, with OEM custom configurations also available.

Splitter type: steel-tube mini PLC · Config 1: 1×16 (1 feeder fiber, 16 subscribers) · Config 2: 2×1:8 (2 feeder fibers, 8+8 subscribers) · Field-swappable in same tray slot

ABS+PC Housing - IP65, UV-Stabilized, Key Lock, −40°C to +70°C

The GL-CTO16 housing uses ABS+PC engineering plastic compound - polycarbonate for impact resistance and dimensional stability at temperature extremes, ABS for processability and UV inhibitor compatibility. The UV stabilizer additive prevents the surface photodegradation and micro-cracking that affects standard ABS in outdoor aerial and pole-top deployments within 2–3 years.

IP65 protection (complete dust-tight + water-jet resistant from any direction per IEC 60529) covers all standard above-ground outdoor deployment conditions. The key lock with two keys supplied prevents unauthorized access - a standard requirement for outdoor FTTH access terminal installations where the enclosure is accessible to non-technical personnel at subscriber premises. The compact 208×241×117mm footprint supports single-technician installation in all mounting configurations.

Material: ABS+PC + UV stabilizer · Rating: IP65 (IEC 60529) · Lock: key type, 2 keys supplied · Dimensions: 208×241×117mm · Temp: −40°C to +70°C · Color: grey

Wall / Pole / Aerial Mounting - All from a Single Housing SKU

The GL-CTO16 supports three standard FAT/CTO outdoor installation methods from a single housing configuration. Two mounting brackets are included as standard - configured for wall mounting (screw pattern for external wall attachment to concrete, brick, or timber surfaces) and pole mounting (hose clamp attachment compatible with 60–120mm round utility poles). Aerial messenger cable lashing attachment is also supported with the optional lashing bracket accessory.

The cable entry accepts up to Φ18mm cable outer diameter via mid-span entry (waterproof gland or uncut through-cable port). This diameter covers standard 4F–12F distribution cables commonly used as FTTH feeder cables to FAT/CTO nodes. Custom cable gland sizes available for non-standard feeder cable diameters.

Mount: wall / pole / aerial · Hardware: 2 × brackets included · Cable entry: 1 mid-span, Φ18mm max OD · Gland: waterproof or uncut through-cable port · Custom gland sizes: OEM available

Field installation

GL-CTO16 Installation in 4 Steps - No On-site Splicing at Subscriber Ports

The complete GL-CTO16 installation workflow. Splicing is required only at the feeder cable-to-splitter input connection - all 16 subscriber drop ports activate by plug-in. Total installation time for a fully-loaded 16-port GL-CTO16: approximately 45–60 minutes for a practiced installer.

01

Mount the enclosure

Attach the GL-CTO16 to the installation surface using the supplied brackets - wall mount (screw pattern) or pole mount (hose clamp attachment). Confirm the orientation provides correct cable entry direction and the Mini SC adapter panel faces downward or sideways to minimize water pooling at port caps.

02

Prepare and splice feeder cable

Route the feeder cable through the cable entry gland (Φ18mm max). Strip the cable to the appropriate length, route to the splice tray, and fusion splice the feeder fiber(s) to the PLC splitter input pigtail(s). Load the splice protector into the steel-tube fixation slot and close the tray.

03

Verify with OTDR

Before closing the enclosure, verify insertion loss at the splitter input using an OTDR from the feeder cable side. Confirm splice loss is within link budget. For 1×16 configuration: expected IL at each output port is approximately 12.5–13.5dB (splitter IL) + splice loss + cable attenuation.

04

Activate subscriber ports

Close and lock the enclosure. Each of the 16 Mini SC adapter ports can now be activated independently by plugging in a pre-terminated drop cable assembly - no opening the enclosure, no splicing. Pull the port cap, plug the drop cable connector, and the subscriber path is live.
